Cybersecurity - A vital industry for tomorrow’s digital economy

Our lives are becoming ever more digital. Computers are part of everyday work and smartphones are an integral part of our lives.
As the Internet of Things (IoT) proliferates, which includes things like autonomous driving, networked health services and Smart Homes, businesses and people also will become increasingly vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

Why Allianz Cyber Security?

1.   Exposure to a major growth theme

Cyber security has numerous growth drivers, both in the short and long term. The megatrend “Digitalisation” makes our digital lives more vulnerable, ultimately increasing the need for cyber security. This has been accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, as digitisation has increased much faster than anticipated.

2.   Pure play exposure to cyber security companies with mid-cap bias1

The Fund seeks to identify secular winners that benefit from long-term growth tailwinds. It invests in a range of 30–60 security stocks, mostly pure play, offering a concentrated, high-conviction portfolio.2

3.   One of the longest track records
in the cyber security space

With over 20 years of experience, the fund management team has one of the longest track records of engaging with cyber security stocks.

Indiscriminately, governments, powerful institutions, big business and individuals have all proved vulnerable. Cybersecurity is multi-layered and multi-faceted but companies that provide solutions to tackle the ever evolving threats are in a position to provide a long-term growth opportunity for investors.

Outlook and commentary
The attack was caught before it could inflict harm. On 8 February 2021, hackers remotely accessed the city of Oldsmar's water treatment plant in Florida and changed the level of sodium hydroxide by 111 times. At these levels, the 15,000 residents would have fallen seriously ill. Luckily, the water never reached their homes - the Florida water treatment hack was foiled.

Outlook and commentary
Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computers, mobile devices, and other digital assets from malicious attacks. Over the last few decades, cyberattacks have become an evolving danger to both organisations and individuals. The growth of technology has led to more interconnectedness of organisations’ systems as well as a greater individual online presence.

Investing involves risk. The value of an investment and the income from it may fall as well as rise and investors might not get back the full amount invested. Investing in fixed income instruments may expose investors to various risks, including but not limited to creditworthiness, interest rate, liquidity and restricted flexibility risks. Changes to the economic environment and market conditions may affect these risks, resulting in an adverse effect to the value of the investment. During periods of rising nominal interest rates, the values of fixed income instruments (including positions with respect to short-term fixed income instruments) are generally expected to decline. Conversely, during periods of declining interest rates, the values of these instruments are generally expected to rise. Liquidity risk may possibly delay or prevent account withdrawals or redemptions. The volatility of fund unit/share prices may be increased or even strongly increased. Past performance does not predict future returns. If the currency in which the past performance is displayed differs from the currency of the country in which the investor resides, then the investor should be aware that due to the exchange rate fluctuations the performance shown may be higher or lower if converted into the investor’s local currency.
